Privacy Curtains in a Routan

My VW Routan has a 5-ft. long overhead console (designed to hold DVD players), making it difficult to hang privacy curtains. Here's how I worked around that console--at least for now.

From the videos I've watched, I gather that setting up privacy curtains in a minivan is difficult to begin with.

By privacy curtains I mean the blackout curtains that hang immediately behind the driver's and passenger's seats in a minivan camper. These curtains should not only prevent people from being able to watch you sleep, change clothes, give yourself a sponge bath, or use the 5-gallon bucket; in my opinion, they should also assist with stealth camping. Ideally, you should be able to turn a light on in the back without anyone outside the van noticing.

I've seen people try Velcro, curtain rods, bendable metal, and paracord to hang privacy curtains with varying success.

I have yet to see privacy curtain in a minivan with the extended overhead console (a.k.a. DVD rail system) I have in my 2010 Volkswagen Routan. I haven't measured it, but I think my console is about 5 feet long. Here is a picture:

I don't have any actual TVs or DVD players in my Routan's rail system. Here's a view facing the other way:

If I were to just remove the long overhead console, I would be left with an ugly stretch of partially exposed roof and electrical wires. The wires lead to the rear air conditioning control knobs and LED lights.

I also thought about trying to hang a privacy curtain in front of the long rail system; there is a gap between it and the shorter console. However, I worry the curtains would hang too far forward to be effective in stealth mode; I'd have to tuck them over and behind the seats.

My VW Routan Privacy Curtain Solution... For Now

It's not perfect, but here's what I did:

  1. I picked up a set of these windshield sun shades. The first thing I'll do when parking in stealth mode is pop these into the windshield.
  2. When I was making Reflectix window covers for all of the back windows, I cut a set for the windows on the driver's and passenger's side doors, too. One side of each window cover is black felt and makes it look like the window is just darkly tinted. In stealth mode I will have to quickly slip those into place.
  3. I bought this set of blackout curtains on Amazon and a few jumbo bulldog clips from Hobby Lobby (because even the largest binder clips I could find were too small). I fold the visors down and use the clips to secure the curtains into place on the visors. There is also some tucking involved; I need to buy a few more of the metal clips.

I believe this combination will work--at least temporarily. If you come across any examples of a creative blackout curtain solution for a Volkswagen Routan, Chrysler Town & Country, or Dodge Caravan with the long overhead console, please leave me a comment below.
